close National music writer, musician and ABC regional radio broadcaster Tony Hillier has returned to the airwaves of Cairns FM89.1 – a station he once managed – to produce/present a new weekly program. “I initiated “Planet Jazz” to combine my favourite genres”, says Hillier, pointing out that since the genre’s early days, jazz players have coloured their musical canvasses from a global palette. “With the program, which features new releases each week along with classic blasts from the past, I endeavour to demonstrate that jazz is a broad and eclectic church. ‘Planet Jazz’ also features the only definitive gig guide to Cairns and environs”.

So much of what gets recorded never gets heard on commercial radio, but this program atones for this for a couple of hours every weeks. Unplayed B sides - often where the artist really lets themselves loose with something a bit risky in the marketplace as an a side - overlooked album tracks, songs that were hits but have been lost in the mists of time, and songs that never were hits at all - there's millions of them out there and every week I spotlight a few that have not had their due. Just as long as I think that they will engage the listener on the first hearing of songs that have not been played to death, but are played only on Off the Beaten Tracks.

This is the program where i - Dr Brian - provide my individual and individualistic viewpoint on the latest events, trying to put them into the broader picture. The “Made in Italy” program is a local multicultural program in Far North Queensland designed to bring together the Italian community of Cairns and people who have a love for all things Italian. The program includes interviews, news from Italy and locally, upcoming events and community announcements that may help our listeners live a better quality of life (e.g the NDIS rollout in QLD). Our local Italian community group, the Dante Alighieri Society also holds various events such as national celebrations, movie nights and Italian language courses which we proudly promote to our listeners who would like further contact with other Italians and people with an Italian background or love of Italy.
